  19. From a Command Prompt (CMD.EXE), if you start an application with
  20. the /REALTIME switch, Windows NT may appear to hang.
  21.  
  22. CAUSE
  23. =====
  24.  
  25. The /REALTIME switch starts an application at a higher priority level
  26. than normal. This gives the application more processor time to use
  27. during its execution. If you use this switch on applications that are
  28. not designed for it, Windows NT will not respond to any other commands
  29. and will appear to hang, even though Windows NT is actually still
  30. running and executing as instructed by the command line switch.

  32. RESOLUTION
  33. ==========

  35. To prevent this situation from occurring, it is possible for the
  36. Administrator of the system to set a User's rights so they are unable
  37. to use this feature of setting thread priorities. Power Users are
  38. given the right to Increase Scheduling Priorities by default.
  39.  
  40. To remove the right to Increase Scheduling Priorities, use the
  41. following procedure:
  42.  
  43. 1. Open the User Manager in the Administrative Tools group.
  44.  
  45. 2. Select Policy from the menu and then select User Rights.
  46.  
  47. 3. Select the Show Advanced User Rights check box.
  48.  
  49. 4. Open the Rights box.
  50.  
  51. 5. Select Increase Scheduling Priority.
  52.  
  53. 6. Remove any desired Users or Groups from the Grant To box.
  54.  
  55. Without the Increase Scheduling Priority right, users will be unable
  56. to use the /REALTIME switch.

  61. Steps to Reproduce Problem
  62. --------------------------

  64. 1. Open a Command Prompt from the Main group.
  65.  
  66. 2. Type the following command:

  68.    START /REALTIME EDIT.COM
  69.  
  70. 3. When Edit is opened, select the File menu.
  71.  
  72. At this point, the system will not respond to any keyboard or mouse
  73. commands.
